
FIBA Africa resolve to launch Women’s version of BAL

The development will go long way in boosting women's basketball in Africa
In a move aimed at addressing imbalance between women and men's basketball, FIBA Africa has resolved to introduce a professional women's basketball league similar to the men's Basketball Africa League (BAL).
During a Central Board meeting held on the sidelines of the ongoing FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup tournament in Maputo, FIBA resolved to rename the ongoing 10-team event to Africa Women's Basketball League.
The board also implemented a new qualification system to the new competition in the session was chaired by FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave.
In attendance were also FIBA President Hamane Niang, Executive Director Africa Alphonse Bile, Members of FIBA Africa Executive Committee, Presidents of FIBA Africa Sub-zones among others.
The development will go long way in boosting women's basketball in Africa and member countries were urged to brace themselves for the challenge.
The men's competition, BAL is in its third edition. After the first and second qualification competitions, the 2023 BAL season has been set to tip off on Saturday, March 11.
It will once again feature the top 12 club teams from 12 African countries playing a total of 38 games in Dakar, Senegal; Cairo, Egypt and Kigali, Rwanda over three months next year.
